Papers, projects, assignments--does this sound familiar? Add your hectic family, your personal interests, and your career responsibilities into the mix, and stress is likely to follow. There is no "one size fits all" approach to managing stress at Empire State University. You will find resources, activities, and exercises in the links below that may help you manage your stress.

  • How stressed are you? – Take this free stress test from the stress management society to get a better idea of your stress level and how to handle it.
  • Managing Stress: Tobacco – The University of Georgia's website presents many facets of life that contribute to stress for students and recommends using a wellness lifestyle approach to cope with them.
  • Stress Management Techniques – The Mindtools Web site helps you identify sources of stress and provides techniques to help you cope with stress on a daily basis.
  • Stress Management Video – These videos (all less than 10 minutes) give support for different areas such as different types of grieving and media-induced stress.

As an Empire State University student, you will spend much of your study time reading and responding to textbooks, journal articles, and other types of academic materials.  Fortunately, there are note-taking techniques available that can improve your ability to find and organize key concepts efficiently and effectively.

  • Taking Notes–The Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) website provides an exercise in one way to be more effective in taking notes from your textbooks.
  • Other Note-taking Systems–Cal Poly's Academic Skills Center provides examples of note-taking methods such as mapping, charting and the Cornell Note-taking Method.
  • Note-taking Tutorial--The Southern Oregon University's "Tips for Online Learning/Distance Learning" includes a helpful resource for note-taking.
