"Teach and Taste: All About Chocolate," An Educational and Delicious Event

Sky Armory in Syracuse was the setting for "Teach and Taste:  All About Chocolate," when two of this year’s Scholars Across the College, Kim Stote and Dana Gliserman-Kopans, presented to a full room of alumni, students, faculty and staff.

They were welcomed and introduced by alumna Jacki Hannon ’15, a current MBA student and member of the college's Student Leadership Institute, who is the high-end spirits manager at the Eagle Beverage Company.

The spoke about the commodity of chocolate in the historical/cultural context – in terms of nutritional efficacy and effects and in relation to participants’ experiences with and memories of chocolate.

After their presentation, the audience was treated to several chocolate samples from college alumnus and Alumni Student Federation Board of Governors member Michael Woloszyn ’03, owner of Lune Chocolat in Manlius.

The Scholars Across the College program offers faculty the opportunity to share their ideas, research, reading, writing and professional activities with members of the college community.

About the Faculty

Kim Stote

Kim Stote, associate professor and interim dean of health professions at SUNY Empire State College, was recently awarded with her second Fulbright Scholarship. She earned a doctorate in Nutrition Science from the Graduate School of Syracuse University, where she also received the Doctoral Prize for Scholarship and Research.

In addition, she earned her Master of Public Health from the School of Public Health at the University of South Florida.

She is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and completed a dietetic internship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

She completed a postdoctoral fellowship from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She is an active member of the American Society for Nutrition, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Dana Gliserman-Kopans

Dana Gliserman-Kopans is an associate professor in the Department of Literature, Communication, and Cultural Studies at the college.

She works in 18th-century British literature and culture, and her interests are in gender and in the intersections of legal, medical and cultural history.

She holds a doctorate in Literary and Cultural Theory from Carnegie Mellon University.

She serves as an associate editor of The Burney Journal, and is currently working on early modern theories of conception. Other work explores tea and chocolate.
