The Office of Student Engagement is Now Accepting Applications for the 2022-2023 Student Leadership Institute

About the Student Leadership Institute 

The Leadership Institute at SUNY Empire State College is an elite and challenging yearlong program that builds upon your existing leadership skills and propels you to the next stage of your leadership development. It is based on the Social Change Model of Leadership, which offers students the opportunity to engage in individual and group leadership while committing to a social action project. 

The Leadership Institute is free for all students accepted into the program. It includes all hotel fees for the Winter Residency and Spring Student Conference.  
 

Criteria for Consideration in the Leadership Institute 

Students who meet or exceed the following are eligible for consideration: 

• Matriculated student at SUNY Empire State College; 
• Have a current GPA of 2.0 or higher; 
• Have completed one or more terms with the college before the fall of 2022. 
   

Benefits of Successfully Completing the Leadership Institute 

There are numerous benefits for students who make the commitment to the Leadership Institute and successfully complete it. They include: 

• Experience with self-assessment 
• Improved conflict resolution skills 
• Preparation for public speaking 
• Improved problem-solving skills 
• Improved ability to engage in civil discourse 
•  

These skills will help you move forward in both your educational and professional careers, as well as help you build self-confidence. Greater confidence in turn will help improve your overall sense of well-being. 
 

What the commitment includes 

The Leadership Institute requires a one-year commitment beginning with the Fall 2022 Term. This commitment includes: 

• Virtual attendance at the Fall Intensive, October 2022 
• Attendance at the winter Student Leadership Institute Residency, January 2023 
• Attendance at the Spring Student Conference, April 2023 
• Monthly webinar meetings 
• Monthly meetings with a leadership coach 
• Attendance at one Deliberative Discussion of your choice 
• Completion of one Informational Interview of your choice 
• Completion of an individual volunteer project and group social action project 
   

How to apply 

You will need to complete the full application, including three essays of no more than 500 words each, and provide a letter of recommendation from a SUNY Empire mentor, faculty, or staff member. The application window is open until August 24, 2022 at 5 p.m. Once this date passes, we will contact those with completed applications to schedule a telephone interview.
