STARS Study Group

By Lisa Brandler, current student

The STARS (Studying Together and Reaching Success) study group was started by alumna, Liza Rochelson. Liza began feeling isolated while taking Independent Studies during the height of the COVID pandemic. Her study buddy, her dog, gave her the inspiration she needed to start this virtual study group.

The virtual study group tries to simulate the feeling of an on-campus study group, where students independently study for their own classes, with the support, companionship, and camaraderie of other students studying with them. In the study group, there is encouragement, advice (both for school and home), and accountability from others in attendance.

As a student, I have found it extremely helpful, and more valuable than I could have ever imagined. There are also great networking opportunities since you meet students in other programs. We help each other achieve academic success! There is now even a discord channel where we can connect outside of the scheduled study groups.

STARS meets on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 12 to 2 p.m. You can find the link to join through SUNY Empire Connects

We are always looking for support and feedback from fellow students on how to improve the STARS study group. Consider joining one session or attending regularly!
