Purpose
Empire State University students may cross register at other institutions. This option expands the variety of learning resources available. For cross registration, a course must be taken for academic credit at a college or university that is accredited or a candidate for accreditation by a recognized regional accrediting agency.
Definitions
Advanced Certificate A post-baccalaureate certificate composed of graduate level coursework. Advanced certificate study is separate from that of study in preparation for a graduate degree in that a student must apply separately for graduate degree program study.
Certificate of Advanced Study Post-master’s certificate that permits students to further their knowledge through detailed study.
Cross Registration Enrollment at another accredited college or university to complete degree requirements at SUNY Empire.
Residency Requirement The minimum number of earned SUNY Empire credits required to be awarded a degree from the institution.
Policy Statements
An undergraduate student may cross register for no more than 50 percent of their total SUNY Empire State University credits.
A graduate student may transfer, cross register, and/or earn evaluated credit for up to a combined total of 12 credits into master's programs, 6 credits into doctoral programs, and 3 credits into advanced certificate programs and certificates of advanced study. A student may satisfy no more than a combined total of 50% of the credits toward a graduate certificate or degree program using transfer, cross registration, evaluated credit ( e.g. prior learning assessment or direct assessment), and shared credits from a previously awarded graduate credential at the same level combined. SUNY Empire schools/colleges and individual programs may set lower limits for transfer, cross registration, and evaluated credit. See the catalog for individual program limits.
The grade earned at the host institution will be reflected on the SUNY Empire transcript except for graduate-level grades below C. These grades will be recorded as F. Course grades earned do count toward the SUNY Empire G.P.A., and credits count toward the residency requirement. The start date of a cross registered course must fall within the same financial aid term (fall, spring or summer) as all other components in the SUNY Empire enrollment.
