How did you land at Empire State University?

Due to family obligations, I had to postpone my dream of attending college until later in life. Educational opportunities were further deferred after marriage and subsequent divorce. I always felt something was missing because I had not attended college. My parents never attained higher education, and I always wanted to fulfill this dream for myself and for them.

I am remarried now. My husband (Albert Culler) attended SUNY Empire about a year before I started. He loved the learning environment, the mentors, and the professors and suggested that I enroll. I was apprehensive at first, but with his encouragement, I took the leap and am now fulfilling my goals.

What are your educational and career plans?

In 2022, I obtained an associate degree in cultural studies with a concentration in African-American history and culture. I’m now pursuing a BS in historical studies with the same concentration. I plan to get an MA in teaching and become a teacher.

What are your career goals?

I want to teach middle school students. They are so impressionable and benefit from teachers who positively impact their lives.

What would you like others to know about SUNY Empire?

The faculty and administrators at SUNY Empire provide a smooth transition, especially for adult learners. SUNY Empire gives you college credit for skills and life experiences through Prior Learning Assessment, which saves money and time while earning your degree.

In addition, I love that you’re assigned a mentor who guides you and is there to support you and answer your questions. I’m so glad I decided to attend college, even more so because of my positive experiences at SUNY Empire. I am truly honored to be a recipient of this scholarship and for the generosity that has enabled me to continue pursuing my goals.
